You may have heard about the Northwest Naturals recall - what you probably haven't heard is the bad science that made it happen. The only food that tested positive was an open bag from a contaminated environment.
You may have heard about the Northwest Naturals recall - what you probably haven't heard is the bad science that made it happen.
The only bag of Northwest Naturals food that tested positive for H5N1 was an opened bag, in a home with a cat that had already tested positive.
The Oregon Department of Agriculture confirmed that they tested sealed bags in the same home, none of which tested positive. In fact, NO other bags have tested positive. Unfortunately the ODA did not follow proper scientific method for testing, and caused panic by testing an opened bag in a contaminated environment. And this information was never disclosed to the public.
We can't say for certain if this was a deliberate attack on the Oregon-local pet food manufacturer, or simply negligence or ineptitude on the part of the Oregon Department of Agriculture. Either way, it's unfortunate that their poor testing practices have caused so much unnecessary panic, and done so much harm to a safe, and healthy pet food manufacturer.
